Let There Be Nuts!
A downloadable game for Windows
Let There Be Nuts! is a project I submitted for the Brackeys Game Jam 2021.2. I was ecstatic when I found out that I won #1 in Game Design for a jam hosted by one of my favorite YouTubers. This is also my first jam submission ever, so I'm excited to see what you gamers think!
I spent the first day brain storming for ideas and eventually came across a Katamari video. I've never played Katamari, but I thought a game like that would fit perfectly for a theme centered around chaos! I found out pretty early on in development that the absorption mechanic was simple enough to get working in one line of code. Just parent the object you collide with to your character object, and it's easy sailing from there.
Personally, the hardest part of development for this game was level design. I think I spent about half of the jam just working on the layout of the map. I also struggled a bit developing a solution that would automatically detect if an object was smaller than you. Running out of time, I finally settled on a hidden tier system that would allow you to absorb objects in the same tier as you.
The tier system works behind the scenes. For example, you start off in the Small tier where you can collect smaller plants and rocks. After enough points, you "level up" to the Medium tier where you can grab more objects like benches. As you play, you'll find that it's not the most perfect system (some objects that look smaller than you may not stick to you), but it was the best I could do with what little time I had.
I hope you enjoy the game and be sure to share your highest score!

Hi! I am playing and streaming top-50 overall games today/tomorrow (starting September 12th at 16:00 UTC and likely for 4-5 hours minimum): https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-6/topic/1640613/streaming-top-ranked-games-on-septe...
I'll play your game anyway, but it will be nice to have you on stream:) If you plan to join the stream, please let me know and I will wait for you to actually join before playing your game (let me know when you join in the stream chat). If you can't make it to this stream, but still would like to see your game being played live - let me know as well and I'll postpone your game till the next stream.
Keep in mind though that I am typically quite honest and if you join the stream be prepared to hear what I actually think about the game, which might quite disagree with the rankings.
